5 out of 5 stars Sugar-Free & Excellent!   February 6, 2008

We have been using this Schiff Children's Chewable for 3 years. Both our children take these and they love them. There is no sugar in them and they are not in the shapes of Disney & TV characters...Yay! It's true that they aren't sweet like candy--that's because they AREN'T candy. Everything need not taste like sugar and candy. This is something with medicinal properties and to equate medicine as "Yummy" is ridiculous. It SHOULD taste different. It's the same with vegetables--why do so many American kids have "issues" with vegetables? This is not the case in other countries. That is why people are dying in this country of drug overdoses and obesity on a regular basis. The relationship to medication should be established early on in a child's life. Medicine is medicine and candy is candy. Period.

5 out of 5 stars Contain what they claim and the kids love them!   November 19, 2009

Kids love them and the testing I've seen indicates they provide what the label indicates. Love that they aren't full of sugar!

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't Look (or Taste) like Candy. Includes Iron.   August 10, 2010

These vitamins took some time for us to find. After wading through an endless sea of candy-like chewables that lacked essential nutrients, we were delighted to find Schiff... and haven't looked back.

Years ago vitamin manufacturers had the not so wonderful idea to make children's vitamins appear (and taste) like candy. Executives loved the idea that children would finally start taking their vitamins... and companies' profits would soar as a result. There was just one problem. The children did take them, and then some, often sneaking into the kitchen when their parents weren't looking and gobbling up the vitamins like, yep, you guessed it, just like candy. This temptation (and lack of parental oversight) resulted in numerous deadly iron overdoses, something that brought on great sadness for parents and lawsuits for vitamin manufacturers.

Now the manufacturers loved their new profits but hated the pesky lawsuits for some reason. So in their infinite wisdom (read: at the urging of their lawyers), these executives decided to keep the candy-like appearance of their vitamins and exclude the iron. But here's the problem. Children desperately need iron to avoid anemia ( a condition more and more common in children these days), and providing a well-balanced daily diet that provides enough of this mineral is not as easy as it sounds. So the manufacturers kept their profits and the kids got short-changed nutritionally.

That said, I can report that Schiff hasn't walked down the Flintstone path when it comes to children's vitamins. These have a mild cherry flavor about them - and come in the shape of various animals - but retain enough of their vitamin flavor and appearance that most (if not all) kids make the distinction between candy and vitamins. Don't give in when your kids beg for the artificially colored and flavored gummy bears, look at these vitamins first. These are some of the best available today as they lack artificial colors, flavors, and sweeteners. Most importantly, they include iron, which is an essential mineral parents should demand in a children's vitamin. We've been using them with great success for the past 4-5 years and would recommend them to every family out there.

I take a few with meals, myself. Why not?

1 out of 5 stars Tastes Awful   January 5, 2007

These vitamins were recommended to me by a physician for their nutritional value but, they smell & taste horrible. -- The "Cherry" flavor in these vitamins is not nearly enough to cover the overwhelming "vitamin-y" smell/taste. -- I wound up purchasing Centrum Kids Dora the Explorer vitamins because my children (3 & 6) like the taste. I hated to do it because the first ingredient listed is sucrose (sugar) and I do my best to be as health concious & all natural/organic for my boys as I can, but -- the vitamins won't do any good if your children won't eat them.
